Are you looking for signs or ways to know when to replace your hood? To make it easy, you need to follow some steps. The range hood is one of the most important things in the kitchen. It helps get rid of grease, smoke, and other pollutants in the air in your kitchen. Because of this, you and your family stay healthy.
You’ll want to make sure that your hood is in good shape to keep pollution out. But range hoods aren’t impervious to damage. In some situations, you might need to get a new hood.
If you can fix the problem without getting a new hood, do that.
- A new hood shouldn’t be necessary unless it’s absolutely necessary.
- At least ten years is how long a range hood should last.
- We suggest that you talk to the people who made your hood and ask them what you could do to fix it.
- If something is wrong with the touch panel or circuit board, you can often change it.
- If that’s the problem, you might also be able to find a new motor. You might be surprised at how cheap that can be.
- But one thing is for sure: replacing one or two parts of your vent hood will be much cheaper than replacing the whole thing.
This is a rare replacement of duct.
- If you don’t clean the kitchen range hood filter, heavy oil can build up in the hood and range hood duct.
- Because of this, you might have to get a new duct.
- To keep grease from getting into the duct, you should clean your range hood filter about once a month.
- If you have one, clean the greasy range hood duct.
- Even though it’s expensive and takes a lot of work, it won’t cost as much as replacing the whole system.
Signs that it’s time to replace your range hood
Your range hood doesn’t get rid of all the smoke and fumes from cooking.
If you bought a hood with too little CFM, you wouldn’t have any other options. Even though the speed of the range hood can be increased, the CFM cannot. Then, how can you tell if you don’t have enough CFM?
Look around your kitchen after you’re done cooking. Has the haze gone away? Do you smell anything cooking? If so, you need to find a hood with a higher CFM rating. Before looking for a new hood, make sure the one you have now is also 36 inches from the stovetop. If the range hood is installed at the right height, it will work better.
If your hood has any dents from years ago,
Your hood is most likely to get damaged during delivery. Most manufacturers have a return policy that lets you send the hood back within a few days or weeks after delivery. Use this policy to your advantage and send your hood back within the time limit for a free replacement.
Also, there’s a chance that the installation will hurt your hood. If that happens, it will be much harder to replace your hood. Maybe you were in a hurry and hit it with a pan or other kitchen tool. A little damage might not need to be fixed, but the choice is ultimately yours.
Your kitchen is getting a makeover.
If you are remodelling your kitchen, you might want a new, modern range hood to match your other new, modern appliances. You can replace a wall-mounted hood in your kitchen with an island hood or a hood that is made just for you. You might want a bigger range hood because you’re getting a bigger stove.
Several new features have been added to range hoods since you last bought one.
If you’ve had your hood for a while, they may have added some great new features. The list goes on, but it may include new, stronger stainless steel, auto shut-off, Google Voice connectivity, built-in smoke alarms, etc.

Can you change out a range hood on your own?
Take out the old range hood.
Before replacing a hood, you should always turn off the electricity at the breaker that connects to it. To keep from getting electrocuted, use an electrical detector to make sure the connection is broken. When the electrical tape at the junction is taken off, the wires are also freed. Take the box with the wires out. One should use a manual screwdriver set to take off the range hood and then put it away.
Disassemble the new range hood.
The filters and electric box should be taken out of the new range hood. Use a tiny hammer and a screwdriver to take off the cover of the electrical box and the hole for the power wire. Don’t use too much force, as this could break the range hood.
While holding the range hood, mark where the holes are.
It’s when you might need someone else to help you hold the range hood still while you mark the cutout with a pencil. You can also use two household jacks to lift and secure the range hood in place. Label the screw holes as you go so you don’t have to do the same thing twice.
Make the holes.
Use a power drill to make the screw holes where you’ve already marked them. Then, use a wallboard saw to cut a hole in the wall for the range hood. If your wall is made of bricks, use a little hammer to make the hole. If the wall has pipes and vents, you might want to hire a contractor so that you don’t break the connections.
Install the new electrical box.
The electrical box on the new range hood has a hole where you can put the power cord. Inside the house, the black wire from the range hood cable should be hooked up to the black wire from the power supply. Repeat these steps with the white wire. To make the connections even safer, wrap them with the best electrical tape and put the connection covers back on. It is important because even a small mistake could start a big fire.
Install the Range Hood.
Two home jacks should be used to hold the range hood in place, and mounting screws should be used to lift it into the cutout. Fix the jacks so that the range hood is flush with the bottom of the cabinet. This will keep it from falling off and causing damage. Before using a power screwdriver to tighten the mounting screws, the range hood should be perfectly lined up with a water level.
Turn on the power to see if it works.
To make sure your new range hood works, you will need to reset its settings and turn it on. When the range hood is working right, the area around the cooktop should feel cool and clean when you touch it.
