Exclusive Images and Descriptions of the Wisps and the Witch from BRAVE

Brave

“The Crafty Carver lives in a rickety blackhouse cabin deep in the overgrown Highland forest. This seemingly innocuous, quirky, and toothless crone specialized in whittling wooden bear ornaments, figurines, and curios. But there’s more to the strange longer than meets the eye. Merida begs for a magical solution to her difficulties after seeing through the façade and revealing her as the Witch she truly is. The Witch relents, casting a clumsy enchantment with an incomprehensible riddle that hangs Merida’s fate in the balance.”

Life style of Witch

The witch lives the life of a wood carving and uses her magical skills to aid her craft. However, Merida quickly understands her true nature after witnessing a broom moving by itself, a speaking crow, and other strange occurrences. Merida convinces the witch to offer her a spell in the form of a cake to alter her mother and so change her fate in exchange for buying her entire wood carving stock with her necklace. While preparing the magic, the witch mentioned that a long time ago, a prince wished for a similar spell to change his fate and provide him the strength of 10 men.

The Mor’du Legend

In this animated short, the witch welcomes a new visitor to her newly constructed hut. Her crow guesses the visitor wants the bear spell, so she narrates the story of Mor’du, the demon bear. When she got to the section where the prince discovered her home, the witch embellished that she was a beautiful woman, only to have the crow tell her to stop. At the end of the story, the witch delivers the spell to the guest, who turns out to be Wee Dingwall, in the form of a cake. He panics, claims he simply came by for water, and flees the cottage.

Trivia

The witch’s wood carvings include a bear in the stance of Auguste Rodin’s sculpture “The Thinker,” a spoof of Michelangelo’s fresco “The Creation of Adam” with bears instead of human figures, and a portrayal of a pizza delivery truck. In addition, she offers a 50% discount on all of her inventory, using a current marketing technique, and has a system that works just like an automated message. In addition, the crow requests that a guard sign a delivery notification.

Among the witch’s possessions is a wood carving of Sully.

Mark Andrews, the director, explains the spectral creatures:

“They were said to lead you to treasure or doom—-to change your fate—-but they’re actually natural phenomena caused by marsh and bog gas seeping up through the earth and combining with natural resources to produce the blue flames. People would chase these lights, mistaking them for fairies, and drown or get pulled down into the bogs.”

Andrew’s full statement on the wisps is as follows:

“The will o’ the wisps appear in several Scottish folktales. They were said to lead you to treasure or doom—to change your fate—but they’re actually a natural phenomena caused by marsh and bog gas seeping up through the earth and reacting with natural resources to produce the blue flames. People would chase these lights, mistaking them for fairies, and drown or get pulled down into the bogs.

We made the wisps look like tiny spirits. They’re similar to Marley’s ghost in certain aspects, but Marley’s ghost isn’t a malevolent spirit—despite being terrifying, he’s attempting to warn Ebenezer to alter his ways. That is exactly what the wisps are doing. They have a dualism because they can be either good or evil—they lead Merida into more and more difficulty, but in the end, they take her exactly where she has to go.”
